During the 46th PNAE meeting, that was held in Luxemburg, PNAE members approved the revised Position Statement – “PNAE definition of Paediatric Nurse“.
After the 20 years, The Paediatric Nursing Associations of Europe (PNAE) members have updated the Position Statement “Definition of Paediatric Nurse” to provide a comprehensive description of roles and competencies of Nurses who care for newborn infants, children, young people, and their families across Europe.
We have been working on this revised version for many months as we wanted to capture the hole vision of what a Paediatric Nurse means. The updated PNAE statement on “Definition of Paediatric Nurse” outlines the main roles, responsibilities and competencies of paediatric nurses, necessary to ensure children’s rights, aligning with the values of children’s “best interest” declared in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989).
The Statement is supported by updated literature references or international documents.
World Health Organisation standards (2018) highlight that health professionals and support staff must have the appropriate skills to fulfill the health, psychological, developmental, communication, and cultural needs of children, and of small and sick newborns and their families.
Thus the Statement on “Definition of Paediatric Nurse” should be useful in every country across Europe to protect and promote the paediatric nurse roles and related competencies.
The recognition of these specific roles and competencies is an essential and important source of health for newborn, children, young persons and their families across Europe.
